Bellagio vs Varenna: Which Should You Visit?

Bellagio or Varenna on a Lake Como day trip from Milan? Compare the two villages on charm, crowds, access and things to do — and why most tours do both.

Side-by-side comparison of Bellagio and Varenna villages on Lake Como

It’s the question every first-time visitor asks: Bellagio or Varenna? Both are jewels of Lake Como’s central “triangle,” they sit a 15-minute ferry ride apart, and honestly — most day trips from Milan let you see both. But if you have to choose, or want to know what makes each special, here’s the head-to-head.

The two-minute verdict

  • Bellagio — the grand, famous one. Elegant, lively, more to do, more crowded.
  • Varenna — the intimate, romantic one. Smaller, quieter, easier to reach by train.
  • Best of all: do both. They’re one short ferry hop apart, and plenty of tours from Milan combine them.

Bellagio: the “Pearl of the Lake”

Bellagio sits dramatically at the point where Lake Como splits into two arms — the classic postcard position. It’s the most celebrated village on the lake, and it feels it: elegant hotels, silk boutiques, the steep cobbled “Salita Serbelloni” staircase strung with cafés, and grand gardens at Villa Melzi nearby.

Pros: the most to see and do, beautiful gardens, great restaurants, and that iconic promontory setting. Cons: it’s the busiest village on the lake in peak season, and — crucially — it has no train station, so independent visitors reach it by ferry or bus. On a guided tour that’s a non-issue; the crossing is arranged for you.

Bellagio is the star of the most popular Milan day trip and features in nearly every itinerary.

Varenna: the romantic escape

Across the water, Varenna is Bellagio’s quieter, more intimate sibling. Pastel houses tumble down to a tiny harbour, a lakeside path known as the “Walk of Lovers” (Passeggiata degli Innamorati) hugs the shore, and the pace is altogether gentler. Two lovely gardens — Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi — sit right on the water.

Pros: genuinely charming and less crowded, and it’s the easiest headline village to reach independently — a direct train from Milano Centrale takes about an hour to Varenna-Esino, then a short walk to the ferry. Cons: smaller, with fewer things to do if you like a busy day; some find it too quiet.

Varenna anchors the ferry-hopping Bellagio, Varenna and boat tour from Milan.

So which should you pick?

If you want the definitive Lake Como experience with the most to do, choose Bellagio. If you’re after romance, quiet, and the simplest independent journey, choose Varenna. And if you can’t decide — you really don’t have to. The mid-lake ferry links them in about 15 minutes, and most guided day trips from Milan build in both, plus a cruise across the water between them.
