Map-style overview of routes from Milan to Lake Como's villages by train, ferry and tour

Lake Como is one of the easiest big-name day trips in Italy: the southern tip of the lake sits barely 40 minutes from Milan by fast train. The tricky part isn’t reaching the lake — it’s reaching the pretty parts of it, because Como’s most photogenic villages are scattered across a Y-shaped lake linked only by ferries. Here is every realistic way to do it, with honest times and costs.

The quick answer

  • Fastest to the water: direct train from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni, about 40 minutes.
  • Best for the classic villages: direct train from Milano Centrale to Varenna, about an hour, then a short ferry to Bellagio.
  • Least hassle: a guided day trip that includes coach transport, ferries and a cruise, so you never touch a timetable.

By train to Como town

Direct trains run from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes on the fastest EuroCity services (a little over an hour on cheaper regional trains), with departures roughly every 30 minutes throughout the day. Trains also run from Milano Cadorna to Como Nord Lago, which is handy because that station sits right on the lakefront.

Como is a proper town with a marble Duomo, a walkable historic centre and a lakeside promenade — a great half-day on its own, and the starting point for the fast passenger boats that fan out across the lake. If your priority is minimum travel time and you’re happy to explore one town plus a cruise, Como is the pick. For a guided version, the half-day Como discovery tour pairs the train with a local guide and open return tickets.

By train to Varenna (for Bellagio and the central lake)

Here’s the key fact most first-timers miss: Bellagio has no train station. To reach the famous “Pearl of the Lake” independently, you take a direct Trenord train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino — about 64 minutes over 72 km, with roughly hourly departures — then walk about 10 minutes downhill to the ferry pier and cross to Bellagio.

That crossing is quick and scenic: passenger ferries on the central “triangle” between Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio take around 15 minutes and run every 20–30 minutes in peak season, with one-way fares around €4.60. Varenna itself is arguably the most romantic village on the lake, so this route lets you see two star villages in one day. It’s the best independent option — just watch the ferry timetable so you don’t lose an hour waiting.

By guided day trip from Milan

If untangling trains, ferries and cruise timings sounds like work, a guided day trip does it all for you. A coach collects you in central Milan, your guide narrates the drive, and ferry crossings and a lake cruise are built into the day with free time in each village. It’s the most popular choice for good reason — you swap logistics for sightseeing.

Options range from the budget-friendly Como, Bellagio and Lugano tour (which even crosses into Switzerland) to a private boat tour with a guided walk in Como, or a fully private chauffeured day trip that starts at your hotel door. Compare them all on our tours page.

By car

Driving from Milan to Como takes around an hour, but it’s the option we’d recommend least for a day trip. The lakeside roads are narrow and slow, summer traffic through the villages is heavy, and parking in Bellagio or Varenna is scarce and expensive. A car makes sense only if you’re touring multiple villas at your own pace and don’t mind the drive — otherwise the train or a tour is faster and far less stressful.

Which route should you choose?

  • Short on time, want the water fast? Train to Como + a cruise.
  • Want Bellagio and Varenna? Train to Varenna + the ferry.
  • Want zero planning and a guide? Book a day trip from Milan.

Whatever you choose, aim to leave Milan early — the villages are loveliest in the morning light and before the midday crowds. For help deciding when to go, see our best time to visit Lake Como guide, and if you’re torn between the two headline villages, read Bellagio vs Varenna.
